Border Loop Lookout reviews
21Lovely drive along Lions Rd to get there. Beautiful lookout in the national park. Difficult to actually see the border loop rail. Excellent explanation and link to train timetable displayed by national parks.
Drive with care as there are a few potholes on the narrowish road to the lookout after last year’s rain event.
If you want to see a train go through here most (Qube or PN) pass through early morning (between 0200-0600, heading north) or early evening (heading south, 1600-2100).
Look, (pun intended), it's a lookout over a lush green valley. Or, it was green when we visited. But it's more a start and finish point for a hike of the border loop track. If you're in the area, have a look, but I wouldn't make a special trip to see the view.
Spectacular lookout over dense rainforest, best viewed when a freight train is present, chugging up the spiral below.
I enjoyed the visit. Beautiful overlooking the valley. Seat and tables. Drop toilet. Take it easy over the Grids coming from the north. Cars and Motorcycles.
Great little spot to stop! Toilets, parking and plenty of tables!
The start of a few walks or just stop to check out the veiw!
Fantastic! A very good view. I crossed the border during covid travel restrictions and reached the crossing late in the afternoon. In time to cross though. Nice frienly bloke on duty. The noise in my video is the generator in place to power the barriers and lights. After hours no one is at the crossing but the barriers are pretty effective. Nowadays you would be able to pass through with no problems. Beautiful area of the country
Good spot for a short break. About 400m off the main road. Toilets. Bit of history. Only 2 of these in Australia.
It's a nice place but there is not much to see. The views of the loop are almost entirely blocked by trees. Pretty disappointing.
Nice and secluded spot. Vegetation growth seriously inhibits your view of the railway track. With covid currently stopping passenger train services, only freight trains are running. Hard closure at the border on Lions road
Great views and info boards - pity we missed train passing through; no timetable details online.
Lovely place with heaps of history. You are in luck if there is a train circling the loop. It's fascinating to watch.
If you like scenic drives through bushland, creeks and (Bird life at the lookout) you will enjoy.
Clean shady rest stop with excellent amenities, a lovely view, and lots of informative information/photo boards. Worth the stop.
Interesting rest stop. Picnic tables and toilets. View of the rail loop is good but the chances of actually seeing a train is slim.
If you are travelling the Lion's Road, this is a must.
Looks down on the extraordinary rail loop traversing the hill on its way to the tunnel through the mountains.
It is what it is, a lookout over the historic Cougal rail spiral. It's hard to actually see the spiral though, and 99% of rail traffic that uses it does so at night (I am a train driver who uses this line, so my comment is based on fact!) So those going to see the spiral and trains are almost certain to be met with disappointment. There is a "long drop" toilet if you're desperate, picnic tables, shady trees and old iron barbecues that haven't been used in years! The view however, is spectacular and for this reason alone itself is worth the drive. Take a packed lunch, listen to the happy birds sing and breathe un polluted air.
Nice lookout with picnic facilities, good place to stop along Lions Road. View over the historical border railroad loop.
