Bought this cake as a special surprise for a special occasion, and what attracted me to it was the explanation of the meaning that the Swan origami on the cake represents. It was very beautiful and tasted just wonderful! 5/5. Great cake, a must try

Get there early if you just want a Slice of their Famous Watermelon Cake or new Lychee. Other than that treat yourself to your own size of cake ahead of time.

The cake we had was so dry and really overrated! The lemon and pistachio, don’t recommend for $11!

I have been trying to cancel an order and request a refund or store credit - I have sent them an email with this inquiry (which no one responded to me about) and called them multiple times in the morning which resulted me going straight to voice mail.

We have gone to these guys for years but for one inconvenience that I ask to be resolved. They cant even attend that.

No matter how good is the quality. When the pricing is far from being reasonable and its like humiliating the buyer, one should be insane to be your customer. We followed your instagram and visited a shop. $12 for a tiny bite that is going to disappear before even tasting. Don't buy and Stop any bullish brand.

Everything is delicious but it is definitely more on the pricier side compared to other dessert/cafe places

Tried the famous strawberry watermelon cake. It lived up to the hype for sure. We also tried the lemon pistachio cake. It was the right balance of sweet and sour.

BUT… the customer service here is horrible. Firstly, there are limited seats - 8 bar stools to be exact. We asked the staff for help as we were holding 2 plates and a drink. We needed a seat and there were customers who had already finished their food and drinks. They refused to help and ignored our request. So, we had to stand right in front of the cake / pastry display in the corner to eat. It was so frustrating as we were blocking incoming patrons.

After we finished, we wanted to order a ham and cheese croissant to go. We saw a staff placing it on a tray and was about to wrap it. WE KNEW THAT they still had it but refused to serve it as it was 30 mins to closing time.

IN SHORT, HORRIBLE SERVICE, NICE CAKE BUT NOT WORTH THE EXPERIENCE AND WE WON’T BE COMING BACK.

Me and my family eating Watermelon cake for last 8yrs but todays cake slice was the smallest and equally expensive for the size, it was literally half of the silver plate at the bottom.not enough even for my 5yr old.very very disappointing quantity and size for the 11 dollars.

Fancy bakery with very nice cakes and savoury items. Tried the much hyped strawberry and watermelon cake, as well as the lemon and pistachio cake. The cakes are creative and interesting, but the hype has not worked in their favour. Good but not amazing. Worth going to, but not worth the hype.

Quite disappointed with my experience at the store. I came in to purchase two slices of the watermelon cake. I was told the single slices were sold out and only the $40 cake was available. I purchased it because my friend and I planned to eat it on a picnic. I then asked if they could just cut up the cake at least in half. But they refused? How is it that I'm paying $40 for a small cake and they can't cut it in half. And somehow they're 'out' of single slices but can sell me a full cake. Make it make sense. I bought the cake. Just cut it in half. The cashier was so cold and even pointed at the disposable cutlery and said 'You can cut it yourself' and shrugged.

Located in a beautiful building in the heart of Newtown, Black Star lives up to its reputation for beautiful and delicious pastries. We had to try the strawberry watermelon cake, a baking wonder given the fresh watermelon centre - how they ensure it doesn't 'leak' is probably a trade secret (and worth the rather steep $10 pricetag). The lamb shoulder and onion pie must have weighed 250gm! It was loaded with the good stuff and can pass for a full meal. The coffee was a huge hit with my partner though I prefer a stronger roast.
Only downside is that there's barely 6-7 barstool style seats inside. So grab your order and enjoy it at one of the many benches nearby.

First try was seven years ago and yes, they are famous for watermelon cake.
Even the price gets higher and the size gets smaller, I might still recommend it.

However, I was blown away by their pastry. Couldn’t remember its name in the first picture but can’t forget how it was tasted. Amazing!
The fulfilled feeling maintained and treat my day.

Have tried several pastry stores and already known nowadays new and unique styles of pastry.
But sometimes, you realize it is hard to be good at a simple thing.
I might try their different pastries these days to prove my point of view.

I purchased a Strawberry Watermelon Cake that served 6 pieces during midday on the 26th of September for my mother's birthday. The customer service wasn't great, the young lady who took my order was cold and I felt judged while I took my order. Thankfully, the guy who packaged my cake was friendly. Unfortunately, I am unsure what happened to the cake but the bottom layer was super soggy. I have inserted a photo showing the syrup seep outside the cake. It ruined the texture and it was very mushy. Overall, it was a disappointing experience compared to the previous cakes I had from the CBD store, especially for the price that I paid for.

Great store located near the Newtown station, we take the watermelon cake which perform as good as legend.but we didn't notice takeaway box didn't include the cutlery, if they ask will be very nice

Being a Brisbane boy, I had heard of Blackstar's watermelon cake from my friends, and decided it was a novelty worth trying on my recent visit to Sydney.

It turned out to be much better than just a novelty experience, overall being quite refreshing and light. I also tried the Japanese Forest cake, again, something I have never heard of or tried anything like before. I can't say it would be to everyone's taste, but I did enjoy it.

Price wise you can expect to pay $10+ for a slice of cake. They also offer other savoury and dessert pastries that begin at cheaper price points.

There coffee was above average, not something I'd visit the store as the sole attraction, but definitely better than many a cup I've had before.

The Cafe offers limited seating inside, so be prepared to takeaway if busy.

After all these years, strawberry cake is still tasting as good as it first came out many years ago. Maintaining good standard in taste is not an easy thing to do. Applause here.
