I’m sole tradesman building home additions and structures in Newcastle NSW.
I had a claim from a customer reporting damage on the product 26 days after install and acceptance. Fair trading found me not responsible, but the customer took the claim to NCAT. I was under the impression that the client had previous experience with The Tribunal. I had no previous experience with the Tribunal (NCAT) or any dissatisfaction from a customer before.
Engaging an Building Expert witness to support the Court with the case was a real challenge. I tried to contract a few in Newcastle, I accepted their fees for the service, but they just waisted precious time before the deadline to submit evidence to the Court. I am aware that people are busy, but a courtesy call to let me know would be appropriate.
After a few failed attempts to find “building expert” to even look at the case, I came across Awesim on Internet.
I was pleasantly surprised by the prompt service from the Awesim office. Shortly after, I received a call from Mr. Glen Sim, professional, knowledgeable and straightforward. He accepted the case and guided me for the following steps and Court procedures.
Next to be done was site visit for the Expert Witness Report. The other side (the customer) left us with only one time and day for the site inspection and, thankfully, Mr. Sim managed to organise his duties around this requirement.
What followed was a 43 pages Expert Building Report by Mr. Sim done with such a professionalism and expertise, that made the report from the oposite side in this case looked like a joke done by first year apprentice.
Mr. Sim’s report was honest and unbiased, supported by legislative, codes, industry practice and letters from civil engineers.

On the hearing day the other side showed up with their expert witness, contrary to Courts direction. I imidately informed Mr. Sim about it to seek advice. He responded imidiately. The Court accepted that Mr. Sim can give evidence to support the Court over the phone. Mr. Sim on the phone was superior against the other Expert Witness that was there in person.

I won the desired outcome in this case. More important, this case was a matter of principles, not allowing to be bullied and blackmailed by dishonest customer who only wanted to get a product for free.
To summarise this long review, if you are a honest builder threatened with Court by greedy customer or you are a home owner who was misfortunate to contract a dodgy builder, do not waste your money on lawyers or solicitors. All they can do is hire building expert. And if you are lucky, they will hire Mr. Sim. And he is more knowledge than many of them.

To anyone that will think that Mr. Sim’s services are overpriced, I can assure you they are worth every cent. And something more important that can not be expressed in dollar signs is reliability. A person that you can rely on in crucial moment is priceless. And that is Glen Sim.

We had the unfortunate experience of contracting a dodgy builder who did not build our house to DA Consent or building Standards. We endured a very lengthy battle trying to right things. The builder had no intentions of doing the right thing so we had to enlist the help of a building expert. We went through 2 building 'experts' before we got to Awesim (Glen). We wasted a great deal of time and money with the first 2 'experts', if only we had contacted Glen 12 mths earlier. To cut a very long 3yr story short, we lodged our claim with NCAT and sort the help of Glen to conduct an expert witness report and Scott Schedule to support our claim. Glen was honest and thorough. We appreciated his openness and also credibility in not leading us down a garden path to disappointment. As an expert witness Glen is required to adhere to a code of conduct, unlike many other 'experts' Glen actually does adhere to this code and we respected this as we knew it was important to get a realistic perspective heading into a lengthy NCAT process. We had lawyers, expert engineers, fire consultants and in the end a barrister enlisted to support us through our claim. I do believe due to Glen's experience and knowledge he helped build our case into a credible claim, and whilst every home owner applicant going through NCAT will never come out on top, Glen certainly helped us achieve a 'victory' over the builder.
