Direction Island, Cocos Keeling reviews
7We went to Direction island twice and enjoyed it both time. The positives: easy trip by ferry for $5 return, twice a week, hardly anyone on the island at this time of the year. The beach is beautiful and the water has amazing blue colors. The beach is generally protected from the winds. Good setup on the island with tables and chairs, toilet block, historical information, trail to walk, map of the rip, surfboard to be used for rescue. There are some corals very close to shore towards the end of the beach (towards the rip), multitude of small fish but we also see (other 2 days and about 2 hours in the water) turtle, reef shark, Moray eel, grouper, big wrasse, we also saw dolphins on the way. We did the rip which was ok but our experience was just ok. The coral is very nice on the side, bigger fish, but à lof of rubbish flowing when we were there. With the rip, make sure you have snorkel and mask, can swim 150 m (when you exit the rip), and check the tide so it does not flow too hard. The channel is quite narrow so initially you will be transported very quickly so try to swim across as much as you can as it will be easier after. There have been quite a few near death so don’t under estimate it. Our wife’s did not do it but still saw plenty in the shallow waters. Take food, water, sunscreen etc with you. The ugly: plenty of rubbish floating in the rip when we did it, hips of rubbish on the beach on the other side of the island and at the tip. Overall recommended if you stay on cocos
Very beautiful place. Lots of places to explore on the island with the award winning beach (Australia's most beautiful beach). One thing to be careful of is the rip. It has stunning views but only go there in low tide due to deadly currents (people have drowned in high tide). Very beautiful the hole place is. Stay Safe!
Such an amazing place! Pristine water, good weather. Will come back to this place someday
Scenic and historic Island with yacht moorings and a rip swim at the southern end. Nice walk around the island with great views, part ruins of the Telegraph Station. Lots of hermit crabs. Beach shelters available
