The Scholar reviews
51I first visited the Scholar in 2012 and have been comming back ever since. We live 300km from the restaurant but make a point to visit each year when passing through. One of the hardest things to find is a restaurant that gives you the same good experience time and time again without fail. The scholar gives an authentic yum cha experience with a busy atmosphere. The prices and service are good and the food is great. In my 12 years of attending this establishment, the consistency has been outstanding and it was no different on our last visit a few weeks back. Staff were very accommodating to my 2 year old daughter and made us feel very welcome. This establishment continues to deliver the goods year after year.
My second times here and this is the first place i visit when i came to canberra.
The food is good as it's not that much yumcha place in the area.
Minus: the aunty can't speak english, but luckily our friend can speak cantonese.
Last time i went here was like a year ago so the quality of everything might've changed but last time i went i never returned because of how poor quality everything is here. The staff is so rude, they do not care about you and if you ask them for anything they'll either ignore you or never return with what you've asked for. The food is trash and it was so overpriced too, over $80 for 3 small dishes (i wish i was kidding). Please just go somewhere else to eat this place really sucks i don't recommend coming here.
Not even worth the one star
The tea was decent but the place was filthy, the food mediocre with dishes coming out 45 minutes apart, and the service absolutely atrocious.
I've never seen wait staff so actively ignore patrons before in my life.
The staff ignore white people and they stick you at a corner table away from there preferred customers. We had to flag a staff member over to us after sitting for 30 minutes without anyone attending to us. They don't speak to you or ask how your meal is, and don't thank you when you pay your bill. They behave racist. Also the lobster tanks are dirty and when looking at them i don't want to eat them. Never going again.
Had yumcha here, deep fried foods are nice! BBQ pork bun only 2 but big. Overall the dimsums are nice.
Appalling service and food, long wait on entry, no carts to be seen, no dumplings other than prawn, no spring rolls or vegetarian plates like eggplant or tofu, minimal choice at 1: 30pm on a Sunday, don't bother, didn't even get tea cups for tea, had to keep getting up just for service, we won't be returning. Really bad Mother's Day experience with my kids: (
Ordered a live lobster and so looking forward to a great dinner celebrating My birthday.
The lobster cooked in ginger and shallot sauce. When the lobster dish arrived pieces around the body and legs the meat tasted soft and smell of ammonia. I believed they switch my live lobster with a spoiled lobster.
The waitress was furious and keep advising lobster was alive and took remaining lobster away and they said they will compensate it.
We went there 6 people and they charge us 7 people tea charge. Also, the receipt said 10 % discount. But not even 5 % discount.
Strongly not recommended this restaurant.
Bad ethical services & standard!
Very very surprised with the place for yum cha today visiting from Sydney. I’d say better than a lot of restaurants in Sydney. Very fresh produce too
Good value and tastes like the one we've tried in HK. Booking is a must during yum cha weekend.
The scholar has been my family outing for many years and we've always enjoyed the food that they serve. It's our go to for Yumcha (weekend lunch) and dinners for celebrations.
Although the prices can be a tiny bit high and the selection on the menus could be missing some of your usual favourites from other restaurant.
It still has everything you want.
Disappointing yum cha. Food very average, service poor (maybe they are suffering staff shortages in Covid age). Dumplings all a bit gluggy. Will go elsewhere next time.
Very disappointed, two hours and only served two plates, then the manager told us off, ruined my valentines dinner?
Its so bad! We ordered eight dishes altogether. After arriving here at 7: 10, only two dishes were served until 9: 00. We were ridiculed by the manager. The manager told us to leave if we don’t want to wait. The service is very very slow and bad. I don't recommend you guys to come.
Haven’t eaten here for a very long time. Takeaway for dinner tonight with flavoursome, generous servings, and ready right on time. Will definitely be going back soon
Don’t bother coming here service is appalling. They couldn’t care less about their customers. Twice I have ordered from them yum cha takeaway. The first time
I ordered over the phone and turned up 30 minutes later thinking it would be ready, I asked the person if my order was ready and I watched him put my order in as it hadn’t gone to the kitchen yet. I waited 30 minutes for it so an hour in total. They did not care. Today I decided to try again. Ordered through EASI which said it would be ready in 20 minutes. Arrived 30
minutes after ordering and asked about my order and was basically ignored. People were even coming in and ordering and getting their food before me. I waited for 40 minutes in the restaurant to pick up my takeaway. Altogether a 1.5 hour wait for food. Ridiculous and again not apologetic. I wouldn’t recommend anyone come here. The food is not good enough for such a long wait and the price.
Really good yum cha, although it would be better if they served mango pancakes. Having visited many times, I find the yum cha service much better than their dinner service.
Having eaten Yum Cha in Eastwood Parramatta and Melbourne The Scholar more than holds its own. The serving sizes are the same as anywhere else. The prices are fair we had 11 dishes, including a plate of pork for $112. The service was friendly and attentive with plenty of choices off the trolleys. We arrived at 1045 on a Saturday and there were plenty of seats. The food was fresh and delightful. Highly recommended
My family and I come here often to eat fresh seafood. The food is consistently delicious however the service is a bit of a hit and miss. Sometime the service is outstanding, other times it’s quite frustrating, it depends who you get.
The yum cha here was average - expensive and small serving sizes especially with the cha siu bao. It is the smallest cha siu bao I've ever seen. The are busy but that's no reason for poor customer service. I will call out a particular waiter whose name I do not know but he's a 5 ft 6 skinny little midget with glasses and a small head. He can't communicate properly and clearly and has trouble explaining to us that we don't need to order from the menu, and the e can just wait for the trucks to come around. There are certain menus that need to be ordered. He then took the menu and in doing so, caused rearranging of our chopsticks as well. He does need to be taught some customer service manners.
Not to mention there is no evidence of social distancing with the arrangement of the tables. There is hardly any room to squeeze between the dining tables.
Never coming back here again until I see the back of him.
Yours truly @fooderarri
