I have contacted Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Health recently to alert about nutrition information labelling of a product that I bought in Canberra. The product is an American product and imported by a heavy weight multinational company whose Australian head quarter is located in the Australian State of Victoria. Because the product has no nutrition information label on its packaging and the product discloses on its packaging that it contains sucrose, it is highly likely that it will create health hazard for Australian suffering from diabetes (already diagnosed and not yet diagnosed). As I have bought the product in the ACT and the ACT Health being the regulatory authority, I requested them to investigate the matter. However, to my disappointment, the Customer Service Officer of ACT Health's Health Protection Service, Ms Nicki Norbart first responded to me saying that my labelling complaint is related to product quality issue and not a product safety issue and that they only deal with product safety complaints and that I should contact the multinational company who has imported the product. I am surprised to know the extent to which we are harbouring ill-informed staff in ACT Health out of our tax money who even can't differentiate whether my labelling complaint is a food safety issue or a quality issue. I then responded to her saying that it is indeed a food safety issue because anybody consuming the product in question may become ill as nutrition information particularly the sugar and the salt content information are not provided. It looked like from my response that she understood that it is a food safety issue but still wanted to pass the problem to somebody else. She then responded to me saying that since the product is imported by a company located in Victoria, it is not ACT Health's responsibility to investigate the matter and that it is the responsibility of Victorian regulatory authority and advised me to contact relevant Victorian regulatory authority in this regard. I am now double disappointed. I am an ACT resident, the product is sold in the ACT shops and my State's (Territory's) regulatory authority is not responsible for a product sold in the ACT shops which is potentially an unsafe product for me and for other ACT residents to consume. Hard to believe!
